I want to say thanks to C-Payne for the opportunity to work on photos, video and t-shirt. He is actually starting an events company; so more cycling, 5K, triathlons in the future.This shoot was worth the hard work; but it made my head hurt.

Memorable October

This has been an emotional year for me; particularly as of late.I am blessed that I am okay to continue to do the things I love: run after my precious ing; film my talented friends; photograph my beautiful wife; hang with my friends.

I was with friends while I watched the historic Game 6 comeback.....only to setup a Championship win for the ages, and the most memorable World Series I'll probably ever see.

In ten years, we'll watch the movie; and tell our kids we caught that game; watched it live; stood at the parking garage across the stadium; texted our friends during the stretch; and possibly shed a tear as Carpenter constructed a thank you speech while his daughter cheered from his shoulders.

But to go through so many emotions these past few weeks, and then to ride the roller coaster with a team I grew up watching. Not that I'm a die hard fan - but that it came at a time that I needed something to get me back. During what is usually a magical time for me anyway, without post-season baseball. A time I'm usually focused on my next pumpkin carving challenge while listening to Jack Skellington sing me to Halloween Town. Or photographing the trees change; swearing this is the prettiest season ever.

But this Fall, I was back to Sports Derek; back because I have missed it. Whether it's because I'm not playing in my usual "Fall Men's Recreational Basketball League"; or because I'm not watching pre-season basketball on TNT --- being one of the few guys in his late-20's still an NBA fan. I thank Jordan for this: passing to Kerr for the game winner in '97. But luckily, I had the red birds to grab hold to tonight.

When almost 13 days prior, I found myself with nothing to grab hold to ------------------------ as I desperately tried to fight momentum before hitting the pavement.

I got thrown out of a truck while filming a cycling documentary and for ten agonizing seconds, I thought I might never get to compete again. Never enjoy the camaraderie on the hardwood with the guys, or worst - run after Ing or Liv. But God saved me again that Sunday afternoon.

So tonight I threw in some seeds, threw on my 59-fifty; with the 7 3/8 Cards hat fitting snugly around my healing, now staple-free head -- and I enjoyed a night of baseball; and so much more.

As a new season approaches, I took some time tonight to reflect on the memories we made this summer. Barbecues with friends & family, reconnecting with some old friends, and sprinkler-fun with my girl. This started as a post for her; and while she get's the photo spotlight, I wanted to share some thoughts I intended to write last night but couldn't find the words.

I am a people guy. I love being around others; and I rarely like being alone. If there's a get-together with laughs and good times, I want to be there. I am a projects guy. I love creating and sharing. It's something I must do to feel at peace. I'm always working on "a project"; ask my wife. :)

But as summer is slowing down, and a close friend moves away, (the third in two years); I couldn't help but get sentimental.I'm blessed to have such wonderful and talented people in my life. It's not by chance. People who I care about and who display it back to me; and people who inspire me to keep creating. I have a project in the works right now about this very topic. Standby. (As I hear Steph laughing)

We all spend time on the computer, 'liking' posts & checking up on 'friends', but I urge you to go out and meet someone new or take an old friend out to lunch. Smile. Pass it around.And I want to say thanks to The Fullers. A lovely young couple in their 80s. I met them tonight while on a bike ride. I'll share photographs later. Thanks summer2011.

A lot of people have asked me about the song in short film with the same name, Down The Line. It is by a close friend and talented musician, Eli Nichols. The band is Carver. People have asked if it was written for the movie...haha; no. While we were both working on our projects around the same time, I actually took the name from Eli. The title and tempo just seemed to fit. I was fortunate enough to supply the cover/panel photography for their first album. I am beyond proud of my friend; and their work speaks for itself. I was really inspired today. The sun was out to melt away the snowcrastination that tends to pile up during these months.
First, I took this photo of Steph and Ing to start our afternoon. How I adore my girls....and expired film, especially 690. Then I went on a walk/stroller ride with my lovely ladies. Am I one lucky fella or what? I can't ask for a better Valentine's Day. Then I took Ingrid out to see her Nana, Grandpa & Uncle Darren. Thanks to my mom for more inspiration. Going through old photographs is one of my favorite things to do; and today we found some cool medium format photos of her when she was growing up; which I will share later. I love mini vacations with Steph. I love how she doesn't mind that I typically don't plan things; and if I do, I pretend I don't.
So, we headed to Memphis for a partially planned trip to catch the Lakers in town. I was excited to see Kobe and home-grown Fisher; as well as the dirty Gasol Brothers; but I wasn't expecting to see Snoop a Loop. I guess the D O double gizzle was in town for a concert. Anyway, it was another great game with my lady. A tradition I'm growing very fond of. The first year we saw Shaq and the Suns, last year LeBron, this year Kobe. It was cool to come in February and experience not only the Grizzlies tenth year as an organization, but during Black History Month. They had a cool pre-game honoring MLK as well as honoring a Marine who just got back from Afghanistan.

I couldn't help but think of a young couple finding my truck in the barn 50 years from now. Steph and I love that feeling of finding a treasure and we felt that last weekend. She is blogging about that; while I thought I would post my barn find. I also couldn't help but think of Doc Brown and Marty finding the Delorean where Doc hid it in 1885.
Making room for a man cave means making sacrifices; and this boy will have to wait and stretch his legs come summer. Until then, hibernation in peace.

Most know, but for those who don't; my brother is a US Marine. He served two tours for this great country and after five years of service, he came back home and is now enjoying a slower paced life. He is going to school and made the Dean's List last semester! I'm pretty proud of him to say the least.
But like many men and women who serve; things are dramatically different after their service. From the little things like going to grocery store to larger things like VA appointments and finding their place in the workforce/school/etc. Going from leading a group of Marines in Iraq to sitting in a classroom with 18 year college kids; there are certain cultural differences and communication barriers to manage. But Darren found a quiet place in the country to call post-war home. I wanted to document this time. A time of starting a new chapter. This is that book.

I've also started the man cave, or as Steph calls it, the "basement project". Which I understand because typically man caves consist of kegerators and empty paint buckets for seats. Also starting the basement project today. Steph wants to do a 'before-and-after' so I'll snap some of those...but first, going on a ride. It's 55 degrees in the middle of January!

I've been away. We have been so busy with different things that I haven't been around to update this ole blog. Starting things off: my sister had a baby! A few days after Christmas...so Steph and I were living out of a suitcase while going back and forth visiting. Christmas was wonderful. My plan was to do a best of: 2010 blog post; which was basically going to be my favorite photos of Ingrid; but since we've been traveling so much, that didn't happen.
Steph got me a new camera for Christmas. An Instax Mini; so you'll be seeing more polaroids, and I posted a couple from the FujiFilm -- Ing and I on New Years.
And I got some work featured on our new local cycling club's website; which is cool. It is always exciting to see my work incorporated into things I'm really into. David did an awesome job!
Other than that, things have been somewhat normal. A long list of goals for 2011; including some house projects so look for those. And then of course, Steph started a blog; but no posts yet. The banner alone took a few months....:)

four months

Ingrid turned four months last Sunday. I can't believe how fast time is passing.
After we shot these last weekend, Steph and I thought she looked so big.
So that sparked us to go back through birth photos & videos of Ingrid..........those were joyful tears.
Funny how babies change things. How they change you for the better and make you feel differently about many different things.
Everything has changed and I love every bit of it. I remember when Ingrid was first born, people would just come up to you and want to take a look. This is normal. I do the same thing now. This happened again last night and I was a LITTLE proud.
We went to dinner with a couple of friends and it was a lot of fun. Ingrid is the best baby. Steph carried her in her sling facing outward so she could take everything in. Christmas lights were hung and Mrs Claus was already out telling Christmas stories. This is the best time of the year. I'm very thankful.

Vacation was awesome. It felt good to get away; but Steph and I missed Ingrid like crazy; wow.
We went to The Loop - in STL. I recommend. The Moonrise Hotel alone is worth it; not to mention the shops and diners.
We also went to Six Flags; Fright Fest was going on. Basically a few scary workers and more than a few annoying teenagers...

I came across a few photos I never posted from last year. I think I'll start a new series on the blog where I post a few 'forgotten' photos from my archive.
When I shoot film, I have a print that I put in albums or post in frames, but with digital photography, many photos get looked over and never printed; that's why Steph and I try and go through our photos once a month or so and make a print order.
Because I've found two things to be true: 1. Nothing beats film. 2. A digital photo looks better in print than on a computer monitor.

Last week we took some two month photos of Ingrid. It was Labor Day and we slept in; then had a mid morning photo shoot. Life is good. Ingrid is 23 inches long.
This weekend was full of fun stuff. Steph and I took Ingrid on her first trip to the market of fleas; and she loved it. Shot some film on that trip. And today, Dad and I took the motorcycles on a day long trip to the middle of nowhere.

I have so many memories of staying the night at the Fitch's when I was younger and feeling just like another son. Patricia and Robert, you always made me feel welcome and loved. My family and I are praying for you guys in this time of pain. Kelly was an amazing young man with a huge heart. I think it is safe to say all of us guys viewed him as our little brother. Kelly will be remembered forever. He is now in heaven with our Lord and singing with angels.

A few from the yashica from around five weeks back. We love summertime. And we love my brother.
Despite him being younger and a little shorter than me, I look up to him. I talked to him about the first photo and how it really inspired me; to possibly do a series about Marines after the war. I feel like this photo captures....something; I can't really place it but I guess for me it captures something a little more personal. A feeling of pride that my little brother is a Marine, a veteran and maintained secure forces through both tours while making Sgt rank in the process. You deserve that beer, devil dog.
